Tumblr Changes

I went on vacation and came back to a bit of dust up. I got so many messages and such so I thought I would just post once to hopefully give you my take on the whole thing.

The CEO of Automattic (tumblr’s parent company) said that tumblr is losing 30 million dollars a year and that’s completely true. I’ve been hinting around it for a while but now that the number is out there I can talk about it.

There has been a nice outpouring of support (which means a lot) but I also see a fair number of people telling others to not give tumblr any money because of proposed or past changes. I think that is the wrong tactic. The changes are being proposed are being proposed because people aren’t giving tumblr money. For the last four years Automattic has been trying every way they can think of to raise revenue and none of it has really worked.

The conclusion they’ve drawn is that according to the users, tumblr is bad and isn’t worth paying for or supporting. So if tumblr’s bad we’ll change it and people will finally start supporting us. So by withholding support you are actually making those changes happen. You know the saying if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. You’ll told tumblr that it’s service is broke so they are trying to fix it.

How This Matters to Merch

I’m a merch guy so I’m looking to help tumblr stay tumblr through merch means. My methods are similar to the various organizations that fundraise through food. I want to create stuff that not only helps fund something people care about but also brings joy and happiness by itself.

I want to create stuff that you want, things that you might have bought elsewhere but chose to give tumblr your hard earned money instead. I’d love your help with that. We make much better stuff together.

I’m not telling anyone that they don’t have a right to be upset about things that have happened in the past or things that tumblr is doing now that you don’t like. What I am saying is tumblr can’t get better if it’s not around.

There was a group of angels at the bar tonight. Super intense vibe, but they kept to themselves and didn’t disturb the other patrons, except for one point when they all suddenly burst into cheers and ordered a round for the bar. I asked what they were celebrating. They told me that for a split second all of the air molecules bounced petfectly into one corner of the room. It’s like their version of the dvd screensaver.
